Frequently Asked Questions

Does a digital thermostat really save money?

A: Yes - using a digital programmable thermostat is a terrific way of cutting your utility bills and helps the longevity of your equipment.

Can a "humidistat" save money in the summer?
A: This is a very risky way to try and beat the electric bill. A de-humidistat is the worst way to try and care for the home while away. The long-term studies suggest using a de-humidistat will likely cause environmental issues in the home, period. Ask the Mold Detective for more information at 239-482-1542.

Is higher SEER better when buying a new system?
A: Not always. Higher SEER rated system require higher airflow demands and most existing homes have duct work that was poorly designed and certainly not for the demands of very high SEER equipment. There is a match for each home, but higher is not always better. Also remember if you are a part time resident, you will not realize the savings of a full time resident and there is a return on investment formula to help you decide if the extra investment is worth it.

Are all air conditioning companies certified?
A: No. The state of Florida requires that each company have a state certified contractor as a license holder. The people that work under that license often have no formal training at all. In fact, many of them are trained on the job salesmen with only a commission based income. Kobie Kooling, Inc requires all employees to attend HVAC learning solutions in Orlando, Florida and trained to become N.A.T.E certified. Although it is expensive to do, we do not want anything less than a professional at your home. If in doubt, ask to see their credentials.

Is the second opinion always right?
A: No! Second opinions are just that, opinions. When making informed decisions base your judgment on the verifiable credentials of your professional. This business is full of "experts" that are untrained, unschooled, and wrong. Sadly people often find out too late that a second opinion fooled them into a second mistake.

Is freon illegal?
A: No. The myths surrounding freon, or more correctly r-22 refrigerant, are as wild as bigfoot. R-22 refrigerant is being phased out in stages. In 2010 the manufacturing of new r-22 system will stop and the production of r-22 is schedule to continue until 2020. Intentionally leaking r-22 into the atmosphere is illegal but the leaks in your air conditioning system at home are mostly exempt and not likely to ever qualify as a violation. We do have the ability to stop leaks and we should because we can. By being good stewards of the chemical r-22 we can help the environment and protect our resources.
